I like to burn loose incense, but have a hard time getting the charcoal tablets to light. Do some brands work better than others? Or do they get too old? (I've had mine for a few years).

Ive found that my charcol cones are very sensistive....they do not burn welll the longer I have kept them. They smokem more, yes....but the burning is very apparent. It tells you its not strong and not as effective....when you need to use other herbs for what neeeds to be acheived.

It depends as well on the level of moist they have absorbed so far.
Your room air contains water (humidity), from the weather outside, from your plants, from your breath...
Or:
When the cones/tablets are freshly made (just a few days/weeks old) they may also still contain moist from the preparing process.

The dryer you keep them, the easier they'll be lit.

Blessings!

I was finally able to light a charcoal tab that I've had for 7 years now -- was never able to light it when I first got it. Haven't kept it particularly dry, anymore than storing it in a dry place -- lived in rainforests all my life. But yeah. There you go. I don't think I'll ever figure the fucking things out.

I find that it also depends on what you are using to light the tabs with as well. I like to use either fireplace matches because you can take one a break it up over the tab (similar to kindling for campfire) and then use another to light it with. If I cant use that then I will use one of the long BBQ lighters with the trigger so I can sustain a flame long enough for the tab to light without burning the hell out of myself.

I use three kings charcoal tabs and never have an issue with lighting. I get the bigger ones for longer rituals too. I keep them as dry as possible in an airtight container.
