I wrote this for the youth group at Renaissance Unity and thought I might share it with you all as well.

The Weight of the Struggle

You are in a void. It is deep, dark and chilling to the spine. Your breaths are slow, moving like slugs through the cycle of respiration. Take 4 deep breaths: in & out, in & out…so slow you can savor it. Keep breathing and imagine, for a moment, that you have been down-sized: your body now armored, you wear your skeleton on the outside. And now your body is segmented into three parts. You have three limbs: you are simply an insect, better yet, an ant. You look around through these new eyes of yours and notice that you have been born into a colony.

Yes, you might be there but, what is your place? Why are you here? Can you truly honor your purpose in this underground society? Pondering this paradox, you make your way through the tunnels that those before you have made & moved treasures through long before you arrived. You plan your escape…NOW…RIGHT NOW!

Eventually you find yourself outside of the ant hill, somewhere out there crawling under the lense of a magnifying glass. You scan your surroundings, adjust you antennae and notice your own vibrations. The person holding the magnifying glass is you…and so is the ant.

You notice the spectator rubbing their eye before a smaller lense, a contact lense, comes falling to the ground. It is much larger than you. You are so much smaller than it.

Still, you pick up on trace signs of nutrients, proteins and minerals: all residue of your other self. It would serve the colony well…if only you had the strength.

You look around you, seeing armies of your own, armies of other ants moving things much larger than themselves: dragonflies, spiders, birds and breadcrumbs….suddenly, you are moved.

You open the mandibles you only just realized you had and you hoist that contact lense, that little piece of your other self up on your back. It does not crush you, that skeleton you wear outside of your self is your support. It’s the rock that keeps your limbs from breaking as you fall in line with the other soldiers…and present your treasure to your colony.

"Life is frittered away by detail...simplify, simplify, simplify." - Henry David Thoreau

Very nice Misfit.

"We strive to destroy the evil around us. Yet, we often forget that there is no light without darkness, nor darkness without light. Perhaps a plant it the best analogy. A plant realizes that too little light is deadly, but it also knows that too much light is equally deadly. It is the balance of the two that makes the world."
